The Organization of Aiken Horsepower Association

When formed, the Aiken, SC area was in dire need of an organization for vehicle aficionados to meet to converse with others about their accomplishments and catastrophes concerning their pride and joys. Aiken Horsepower Association was the answer to this problem.

OUR MISSION

Aiken Horsepower Association is open to anyone who has the desire to be a part of a club that  hosts monthly cruise-ins and an occasional special event. A new 'project' is chosen each year. The club collects items and contributes funds that have been collected just for that project.

The Project for the year 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 has been The Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons. Cell phones and linens as well as toys are always accepted at cruise-ins. There will be a special food drive in December.  At the end of the year the monetary funds are reviewed and a portion of proceeds are give at that time.

In 2007 we have added two other fund raising drives along with the Cumbee Center. They are the Savannah River Cancer Foundation and the Child Advocacy Center in Aiken.

Club Profile

Anyone can join the Aiken Horsepower Association. The club dues is presently $20.00 for the primary member then only $10.00 for each family member thereafter over the age of 16, with renewal due in January.

We support the other local clubs and cruise-ins as time permits. So many of our members are also members of other clubs in the area.

We have been told that we are a very organized club. Being established in 2002, Aiken Horsepower has grown quite rapidly. Our motto is: Fun and Fellowship. AHA cruise-ins are like a mini car show without the trophies.  50/50 tickets, door prizes, music and of course, cars, trucks and motorcycles are a must!

First Saturday Cruise-In

Our Club meets once a month on the FIRST SATURDAY in on Whiskey Road at the Home Depot. The official time is 2pm-5:00pm, but gorgeous cars start rolling in as early as 1:30pm. We have been allocated an area of the parking lot nearest Whiskey Road.  Home Depot has been very accommodating and we look forward to seeing you and your car at our next Cruise-In.

Spring Fling Show & Shine

We also host an annual Car Show called the Spring Fling Show and Shine. Our 2008 show will be held at the Aiken Farm Fest. The Antique Tractor Association will be there along with vendors, food, and fun. This will be on March 29, 2008.

Some of the other things that set our show apart are unique plaques and awards. We build a unique 'store front' and take a picture each participant's car that  enters in the show. At the end of the show each individual is presented his one of a kind plaque. We also have T-Shirts printed that vary in color and design each year.

 Our Officers

Our president is a bit unusual. Normally car clubs are predominately men, but our president is a woman. Being one of the founding members of the Aiken Horsepower Association, Barbara Gunter strives for perfection in the operation of the association. She has been quoted as saying "Behind every President, there is a good man!" She will tell you quickly that she could not devote so much time to the club without the help her husband and her son.  Her husband just as quickly replies, "I pay her to do the club work!" Wesley and Barbara Gunter are the owners of Wesley's Automotive Service at 925 Park Ave. SE in Aiken. Their younger son Michael is the head technician of their automotive business.  Barbara has sold her '29 Ford Roadster and waiting to see what her next car might be. Michael is currently restoring a ’70 Chevelle . Wesley's vehicle of choice is a '33Chevrolet .

Speaking of officers, our Vice-President is Robert Wilson. Robert is a stock broker for A.G. Edwards. He owns a 1966 Corvette that has won the prestigious Duntov Award which is presented to the best of the best. Robert and his wife Robbie have been strong supporters of Aiken Horsepower for the last 3 years.

Our Secretary is Vickie Reynolds. She drives a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with leather seats and a his and hers shifter kit. She also owns a 1973 American Motors Javelin AMX with a 401 motor. The interior was designed by Pierre Cardin. It is a one owner car that her mother bought brand new off of the show room floor in Atlanta, Georgia. It is still in its original condition. Vickie is married to Manny Reynolds who has a passion for Road Runners, but presently he is the proud owner of an '89 Chevy Truck that is flamed. Vickie works with the Aiken County Planning & Development Department as a Planner. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Cumbee Center.

Our Treasurer is Sheldon Frick who grew up in Clifton, NJ  turned 60 years of age on December 9, 2006. After going  to school at Clifton High and graduating from Fairleigh-Dickenson University with a NJ degree in Psychology, Sheldon went to work for L-3 Communications, a big aerospace government contractor as a database programmer then a database administrator. After working there 20 years designing and  engineering financial databases, he retired Christmas of 2003 and moved down to Aiken on April 1st, 2004 when he joined Aiken Horsepower a couple months later. Sheldon's pride and joy is his 2005 Ford Mustang and his Chrysler Lxi. His favorite past time is Karaoke.

Now that all the officers have been profiled, who could not want to be a part of such integrity! As was stated earlier, Fun, Fellowship!
